Cookie Recipe from VT Conference

For those of you like me that LOVED the cookies at our conference, here's the recipe:

Cherry Almond Chews

1 c. shortening
1 c. sugar
1 c. packed brown sugar
2 eggs
3/4 tsp. almond extract
2 1/2 c. all purpose flour
1 tsp. baking soda
1 tsp. salt
2 1/2 c. flaked coconut
3/4 c. chopped almonds or pecans, optional
1 jar (16 oz.) maraschino cherries, drained and halved

In mixing bowl, cream shortening and sugars. Add eggs, one at a time, beating well after each addition. Beat in extract. Combine flour, baking soda and salt; gradually add to the creamed mixture. Stir in coconut and nuts if desired. Drop by rounded teaspoonfuls 2 in. apart onto lightly greased baking sheets. Place a cherry half in the center of each. Bake at 350 degrees for 12-14 minutes or until lightly browned. Remove to wire racks to cool.
Yield: about 7 dozen
These cookies freeze well.

Getting to Know You

Did you know that Sis. Bristol eats a hard boiled egg and toast for breakfast, Sis. Deleon eats a big ol' smoothie, Sis. Shell has to have her orange juice and Eggo waffles, and Sis. Hart doesn't eat breakfast at all? Also, did you know that Sis. Sugden was in a Disney commercial in her youth, Sis. June Ferrell taught seminary for 17 years, and Sis. Laurel Ferrell collects bells, seashells, and baskets? These are some of the fun things we learned about eachother last night.

Sis. Stout gave an excellent talk on how Relief Society got started and how we can focus on the meaning of our motto, "Charity Never Faileth."

Here's a quote from her words last night:

Marvin J. Ashton:

“We often equate charity with visiting the sick, taking in casseroles to those in need, or sharing our excess with those who are less fortunate. But really, true charity is much, much more.

“Real charity is not something you give away; it is something you acquire and make a part of yourself. And when the virtue of charity becomes implanted in your heart, you are never the same again. . . .

“Perhaps the greatest charity comes when we are kind to each other, when we don’t judge or categorize someone else, when we simply give each other the benefit of the doubt or remain quiet. Charity is accepting someone’s differences, weaknesses, and shortcomings; having patience with someone who has let us down; or resisting the impulse to become offended. . . . Charity is refusing to take advantage of another’s weakness and being willing to forgive someone who has hurt us. Charity is expecting the best of each other.”

Visiting Teaching Conference 2010

Thank you to all that participated and attended the visiting teaching conference last Sunday. The room looked beautiful, thanks to Sis. Clark, the food was delicious, thanks to Sis. Strickland, and the words that were spoken were inspiring, thanks to Sis. Turbyfield. One of her suggestions to us for getting our visiting teaching done is The Rule of 5.

First, get your appointments made by the 5th of the month.

Second, visit your sisters by the 15th of the month.

Third, report to your visiting teaching coordinator by the 25th of the month.

Cooling Off

The Parenting Breakthrough

Stephanie did a great job explaining the techniques taught in this book. We also were able to share our own ideas and help eachother with the struggles we face as parents. Sis. Brantley was sweet to come even though she has, "been there, done that." This was a very helpful night for each of us and we are so glad we did this. Thanks to Brittney for volunteering Stephanie!

Brand new baby Owen McLeod even joined us for the night. He was so good, didn't even make a peep. :)

I think we will have to do this one again!

Pasta Night!

The Larry, Lini team have out done themselves again! We learned the secrets to making delicious pasta and was able to taste all of their creations. We sure appreciate their generosity in having all of us in their home. It was a such a tasty evening.

They couldn't stop after just teaching us a few techniques, they finished the plate with toasted garlic bread, corn, and ice cream for dessert. Alex, you are doing spectacular!

We are happy to have the Ferrells' in our ward now. We had so many people there. Thank you Carnells! We think you should start your own cooking show. We could either call it "The Larry and Lini Cooking Show", or "Cooking with the Rae-Rae's", since both of their middle names are Rae. Wouldn't that be so cool? :)

Recipe Swap Again

RS Garden Makeover

Sister Collins was our lucky recipient in recieving the Extreme Yard Makeover. She has such a beautiful yard. It was fun to work on it with all that came. We worked hard, but was so enjoyable. The weather was beautiful and the fellowship was even better.

Lauri and Katie worked the shovel. They were a great team.

Carrie, (not in the picture--the photographer), Kathryn, and Kimberly cleaned up in this area.

These gals prepared the area for planting.

Laura and Cathy spruced up around the mailbox.

Judy put together some gorgeous potted plants. I should have taken the picture after they were done. You can see them in a picture of the whole area at the end of the post.

Barbara did as much as she could, recovering from an injured shoulder.

Ali starts putting in some flowers.

Janet works the rake.

Judy taught us how to decorate using fresh flowers. She had some amazing ideas.

This was a favorite, using green beans and asparagus.

But, there is no slowing Judy down, she made these beautiful and tasty cupcakes decorating with flowers made of icing, mini oreos, and gum drops.

The fruit, cheese, and crackers were very refreshing after working outside. Thanks Pricilla!

The Collins were so appreciative. We were so happy to help them.

Cooking with Pip

Sewing Service Project

Our service project for Scottish Rite Hospital was a huge success. We had so many sisters donate fabric, cloth diapers, ribbon, thread, and most of all their time and effort. We were able to complete quite a few baby blankets and burp cloths at the event, but also many sisters brought home fabric to finish up. I am in awe of how many we were able to get done in a short amount of time. Thanks to all! Katie and Lindsay were pumping out those burp cloths in no time!

This ducky and frog pattern was one of my favorites.

Renate and Cathy liked to be called, "the youngins."

I'm not sure what Katie was saying, but it must have been important, or just entertaining.

We had two irons going, keeping up with all the fabric and blankets.

Gail and Stephanie REALLY didn't want me to take this picture, but I had to capture their committment to their task of cutting. It can't be that comfortable on the floor!

I tried to catch Judy in action. She's doing a great job! Doesn't she have such beautiful hair too?

Rose brought some adorable pink fabric and made darling blankets.

Here's just a fraction of the finished products. We had much more by Sunday.

What is Zumba????

I should not have assumed that everyone knew what this Zumba was? If you have never done it before, it is the funnest way to exercise. Music and dancing--it doesn't even feel like exercise because it's sooooo fun. Thanks to Kimberly sharing her love for fitness, we were able to have 2 classes in Carrie's (me) basement studio. Kimberly has also offered to do an evening class coming up in March or April for those of you who need to meet in the evening.

The babies just cracked me up peeking their little heads over our make-shift gate to see what we were doing. They were so cute. They played and watched movies. Some like it, other's wanted their mommies.

We will let you know of our next Zumba date. Thanks to all that came.

Wheat Beyond Bread

Thanks to Azrcka for sharing her expertise with us on how to use our wheat in more ways than just making bread, even though, don't we all love homemade bread? We had a lunch crew and an evening crew. Here is the lunch crew. Katie with baby Hannah, Karie, Jenny, Carrie, Kathryn, and Renate

It's amazing the things you can do with wheat. These cookies had a delicious flavor and texture. Azrcka also made some blender waffles using wheat. The great thing about these waffles is that you don't have to grind your wheat ahead of time.

Armenian cuisine-- This is Soup Kufta with Yogurt. The meatball is made with bulgar wheat, lean ground steak, onions, and seasonings with a margarine and walnut filling.

Pan Kufta, very similar to the above but flattened and fried in olive oil. So good!

This is a tabuleh with bulgar wheat, tomato, onions, and fresh herbs. So refreshing.

January RS Activities

Hike at Kennesaw Mountain-If you would like to burn off those holiday goodies, meet at the visitor's center at 9:30 on Thursdays in January.

Wheat Beyond Bread-Sis. Bedgood will be teaching a cooking class on in her home on January 20th at 12pm and 7pm. Choose which time is better for you.

The Book Club will be held on January 27th at 7pm at Tara Badstubner’s house. The book will be “Trusting Jesus,” By Elder Jeffrey R. Holland.

This book is a compilation of some of Elder Holland’s memorable talks on the Savior and is available at Deseret Book for $24.95, Amazon for $21.33, or other links on Amazon for as low as $10.85. The Kindle edition is available through Amazon for $9.99. Because it is a compilation of talks, the talks can also be looked up individually on lds.org. Here is a partial list of the talks:

RS Christmas Party

The Relief Society Christmas party was such a special event. So many of the sisters where there and it was such a joy to be together. Sis. Brantley opened her home to all and it looked so beautiful. It was amazing how many of us could attend and have a place to sit. Nikki, Carolyn, Stephanie, Azrkca, Judy, Janalee, and Sara ate together in this little private room off the main floor. Many sisters gathered in the dining room.

Lauri, Erica, Lisa, Leti, Erin, and Gayle graced the kitchen table surrounded by many reminders of Christmas.

Linda, Pricilla, Carrie, Emily, and Kathryn were the staff that kept things running. Linda provided us with Christmas aprons as we served dinner.

The Laurels were invited. It was fun to have these cute girls with us. Amanda, Kirsten, and Jun-yi.

The group gathered in to hear 3 Krogh's and a Shell sing, Christmas thoughts by Lindsay and Erin, some carolling, remarks by our president and a presentation of our ornaments by Emily. Thanks to Gayle and Janalee for filling in with the music.

The family singers were such a treat to have at our party.

The house looked beautiful. Thank you to all that came to help decorate.

Judy was kind enough to try and get a picture of all the ladies in attendance. We might have missed just a few, but we got most of us.

Christmas 09

Christmas Craft

For those of you who didn't see our Christmas craft we did this year, here it is. We first spray painted the frames and sanded them if you wanted the weathered look. We used Ali's vinyl on the glass of the frame and tied ribbon around the bottom or attached it on the top tied with a bow so that it could be hung. I think they turned out beautiful. We sure appreciate Ali's craftiness and making it so easy for the rest of us.

Cooking with Leti

Leti was so gracious to open up her home to all of us and show us her wonderful cooking skills. She cooked 3 recipes using beans, cheese quesedillas, a rice pudding, a special green salsa, and more. We ate and ate and ate and loved every minute of it.

Mango and Guava juice is delicious.

Leti's friend, Ingrid was there too. We enjoyed getting to know her.

I am going to eat all that rice pudding myself! I love it!

Fall Colors Hike

It was a beautiful day for a stroll on the Silver Comet Trail. I think we missed the fullest and most colorful trees, but it was still pretty. The kids were faster than the adults on their bikes and scooters. It was nice to get together.

Thank you Stephanie for teaching all of us how to make these adorable cards! We did birthday, Christmas, thank you cards and just anything cards. We had quite a few ladies there, but I didn't take pictures till half of them had already left and I just noticed the Christmas card is not in the picture. Which card do you like best? Azrcka, Lisa (Stephanie's friend), Stephanie, Julie, and Renate each holding up their favorite card.

Visiting Teaching Conference

Thank you to all that participated in our Visiting Teaching Conference. The decorations were beautiful, the food was delicious, and the special messages from our Bishop, Relief Society President, and fellow sisters were inspiring. And also thanks to those who participated in a special musical number. It was wonderful to have everyone there. I hope it was a nice treat for those that do not normally get to attend Relief Society. This quilt is the finished quilt top that we all took part in. I think it turned out beautiful. Thank you Judy, Pat, Tara, and Heather for the other quilts used to decorate our room. It worked well with our theme, "Hearts Stitched Together."

Farewell to the Goett's

The Deleon's held a Farewell party for the Goett family who will be leaving us. We will miss their family and all they added to our ward. Kim and Alison are 2 of our Relief Society sisters. We wish them the best and a safe arrival in Utah. Mike and Kim will be happy to be close to all their children. These are a few that came to see them off.

What's Up?

This is what's up-The book swap at Tara's house was a great turn out! Everyone was able to go home with a new read. I just stopped in to take a picture. Aren't they beautiful? Many of you have already started on your quilt squares. Thank you so much! They are looking great! I will post more pictures as I continue to get them. Thanks to all the quilt leaders who are making this happen. I cannot wait to see the finished product!

More Swimming

We hit the pool again; this time at the Broadlands subdivision. We practically had the pool to ourselves. We spent quite a bit of time there. The big kids played with the little ones and the mom's got to relax a bit. Kathryn and Renate stayed cool. They looked like raisins when they got out.

Ellie brought a friend and Chelsea Orullian, Azrkca's granddaughter, met us there.

Swimming Fun!

We had a great time "swimming with the sisters". The Mommies took turns catching flying children headed toward the pool. This is Ali making the catch. That is Porter if you can't tell, in his hat that kept covering his cute little face as I tried to get pictures of him. Anne's daughter, Emily and grand-daughter.

Eliza has a way finding goggles everywhere she goes. Mostly in the lost and found. Yes, we do return them.

May Enrichment

Thanks to all who came to support our Quarterly Enrichment last night! Here's just an example of what creative, and playful tables our sisters put together for our evening. Thanks Denise, Pip, Brittany, Ashley, and Erica. The tables looked fabulous!

We focused on what we would take on our "Purse"-onal Journey. Sis. Cheney reminded us of the most important things. It was spiritually uplifting as well as fun, with Pricilla's games, to keep us laughing. Also, many thanks to the enrichment committee for the wonderful dinner and dessert.

We had one more really fun table, with a beach theme, but my camera died. I just needed one more picture for it to be complete.

The Parade of Homes Christmas Enrichment Night

We started the evening out right at the Strickland's home where we savored delicious appetizers and visited, while admiring their elegant Christmas decorations inside and outside. Thanks to Heather and Terry for opening up their home to us. Carrey and Ali

"Quilting" Lost Mountain Ward Style

Here are some highlights of the Service Project we did for Tranquility House. We were able to tie 4 quilts. We could not have done it without the help of many hands. Thanks go out to all who contributed, especially Karie Cheney, Janalee Wood, and Karie's mom, Sister Buttle. They spent so much time putting these quilts together to get them ready to tie. And thank you so much to Kathyrn Miller for getting this all organized. What a great idea! The activity girls joined us and learned so much. We appreciate Julie and Jenny for bringing us all together, and for the work they did to help us get it all ready.

It took many teachers, but we got the job done.

Some of the Activity Day girls worked on another sewing project. They were able to practice their stitching. Jenny Woods was a great teacher.

Silver Comet Trail

We had such a nice time on the Silver Comet Trail on Friday. The weather was divine and the company even better. The fall leaves were absolutely gorgeous. Here are a few highlights. Oh, and the sister you don't recognize, that's my sister, Lindsay here visiting me from Utah. She was so complimentary of all the friendly people in Georgia.

Everyone is pushing everyone else's children. It's so confusing!

Kathryn tried to take a picture of me, taking a picture of her. And here come the strollers! No, Lauri hasn't had a baby; she's helping out Ali, by pushing baby Boston.

Karie and Kimberley brought their bikes and kept circling back to check on the rest of us.

Cathy and Renate took off WAY down the trail never to be seen again. Hee-hee! Just kidding. They were serious walkers, just truckin' along. Go girls!

Bread Making at the Owen's!

At the home of Heidi Owen, we learned the fine tips of making homemade bread using our wheat!

The square dancing activity was a hit! Everyone that came had a great time. Kinley Shell taught us the dances and called it out. The enrichment committee decorated and provided light snacks. What a fun idea for a date night! We hope to continue some more fun ideas for dates. Thank you to everyone that came and helped out.

We had some fun fall decorations, thanks to the Enrichment commitee combining their decor from home. It looked festive and fun.

"How Beautiful Thy Temples"
was the theme for our Relief Society Enrichment meeting! We hope you're enjoying your beautiful plaque and your CD full of FHE ideas about the temple!

The plaque reads "Only the home can compare with the temple in sacredness". This is taken from the Bible Dictionary under the entry, "temple."

Cathy Wood who has been in Georgia for 49 years opened our evening as she talked about what it was like to live in GA before there was a temple. The Atlanta temple was announced in 1980 and dedicated by Pres. Gordon B. Hinckley on June 1, 1983! Cathy has been here for all these wonderful events!

Laurie Shell sang a beautiful song (accompanied by her mom, Ellen Krogh) about temples!

Thanks to all the sisters who read our "tid-bits" of interesting information about 7 different temples (prepared by Heather)!

Ali Mendenhall made a fantastic CD with many FHE ideas on the topic of temples! We have a few extras in the RS closet. Ali is happy to make more if you need one ... and you can copy them for family and friends!

Then Ashley Rawcliffe prepared a fun game for us - a trivia game all about temples... now you can play this game with your family... check out the CD.

Renate Kratz, Anne Huff and Ashley Rawcliffe made the SLC temple cookies - yum! Ali Mendenhall made the Atlanta temple mints!

Thanks to our enrichment committee - Heather Strickland, Renate Kratz, Ali Mendenhall, Ashley Rawcliffe and Anne Huff. Plus Barbara Chastain and Karie Cheney (not pictured). Ashley made the yummy punch! Heather made all the invitations and posters and Barbara helped with the nursery (thanks to Nicole deLeon for taking care of the nursery children). It was definitely a team effort.

Just a few of the many sisters who were there. Maybe next time we should take a group picture so we can see all your smiles.
